Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum Art Collection “The World of the Female Form”

  • Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum Art Collection “The World of the Female Form”

The Uesugi Museum will be putting up an art exhibition entitled “The World of the Female Form” very soon!

The female figure has been depicted in artworks throughout the ages. It first gained popularity in the Edo period when it was mostly drawn in woodblock prints before peaking in the Meiji period as the Bijin-ga genre of art (bijin-ga meaning “beautiful person pictures”). Women artists who specialized in this genre of art also made their debut and cemented their position in the mainstream. From there, they made various advances with their work.

The museum will put up works from its own collection based on the exhibit’s theme of the female figure. Just the words “female form” alone encompass a wide variety of art! From the works that abide by so-called traditional form shown in bijin-ga to those that emphasise the individualistic and freedom of expression in intimately realistic figures that have broken away from tradition, there is much to look forward to in this exhibition!

Let us introduce you to the forms which bring emotions, meaning, social commentary, and many more to life.
