The picturesque Kaminoyama

The castle town of Kaminoyama, which is situated along the Ushu Kaido route, is visited by many travelers, mentioned in traveller’s journals and drawn into paintings. Within those paintings, “Kaminoyama Kannonmae” and “Kaminoyama Yotsuya”, which were drawn by the kanoha style painter Gisen, convey the picture of the current Kaminoyama quite well. We can reminisce about how the relay station’s town center was drawn in 1855 in the publication of the “Azumako Akindo Kagami”.

Toward the Ushu Kaido route
The Ushu Kaido route is a very important route which separates from the Oshu Kaido route at Kori then go through Narage – Kaminoyama – Yamagata and many more until it reaches the far away Akita. The hot spring town of Kaminoyama is especially prosperous as a relay station with many visitors coming to see the Daimio residence or the Dewasanzan. In Kaminoyama and the neighbouring villages many remnants of history can be seen and felt.
